I am extremely honoured to have been appointed Club Captain of Mickleover Golf Club for 2023 - our centenary year. I have been a member of the club since the age of 13 and I am truly humbled to have been appointed the youngest captain in the club’s history at 33 years old. I served as Junior captain back in 2006-2007 and the club is a massive part of my life.
All of my family have been made welcome at the club, with my dad joining as a member a few years ago and my mum loves attending the social events at the golf club. I have also brought my other half Steph into the club house, and she has been made very welcome by the other members. This is what I love most about this golf club, the fact everyone is so friendly and no matter what background members and guest have come from, everyone is felt welcome from the beginning.
While juggling the captains’ duties for this year, I am Marketing Manager for a property software company called Inventory Hive. A full-time job but thankfully, my director understands the importance of this captaincy role and has allowed me some flexibility this this year so I can play lots of golf and it will not hinder me in carrying out my duties as Captain.
The Lady Captain, Margaret Brooks, and I have chosen to raise money for a local charity called Umbrella in 2023. Umbrella is a charity which I know is close to many members hearts, as well as Margaret’s. I am sure we will have lots of support throughout the year for this charity with the money raising events we plan on hosting.
I want to thank the members in advance for all the support that myself and Margaret will get this year. I encourage all members to join in this year’s centenary celebrations try to attend some of the centenary events that are planned for this historic year.
I wish every member a guest a fantastic golfing season and let’s have a fantastic centenary year.
Let’s enjoy it!
Mitch Handley
Captain 2023.
Mickleover Golf Club celebrates its centenary in 2023, so it is a great honour to be Lady Captain in this momentous year. I have been a playing member of this Golf Club since 1976 and have previously been Lady Captain and Club President. My longevity in remaining a member, for this length of time, speaks volumes about the kind of place that is Mickleover Golf Club, with its friendliness and camaraderie.
During the Summer months, our Ladies’ Section organises competitions on Wednesday mornings and evenings, with major competitions taking place on Sundays. In the Winter months we tend to play more light-hearted “fun” competitions, although there is the opportunity to join in competitive events, throughout the year, which are open to both male & female members.
Mickleover Ladies have considerable success in external events. Last year we won The Ian Burtoft Trophy, sponsored by the organisers of the Taskers match-play competition, beating over eighty other teams from six other counties and our ladies generally perform well in competitions organised by Derbyshire County Golf.
This year we have many Centenary events planned, both on and off the golf course. Centenary trophies will be competed for and there will be an opportunity to play in a team with a Golf Professional or Local Celebrity. For those who would like to experience golf one hundred years ago, before the production of modern equipment, there will be the opportunity to play nine holes with hickory-shafted clubs. Social events include an outdoor concert and a 1920’s party.
Mickleover Golf Club is a lively, thriving community, with its beautifully furnished clubhouse overlooking its lovely golf course. Golf is a game that can be played by ladies of any age, which I have proved! so if you are wondering if golf is for you, do get in touch. New members would be most welcome to join in the Centenary celebrations with us in 2023.
